When are the White Sox going to sign either Fukudome or Rowand?
The White Sox better be signing one or the other because an outfield of the unproven Quentin and Owens and the injury prone Dye isn’t good enough. I am a huge Jerry Owens fan with his speed and solid defense but the Sox need another starting OF. Any thoughts on this?
You’re right that the White Sox could really use another outfielder, but I’m not so sure they’ll get one of the caliber you have in mind. Good outfielders are a limited commodity. Fukodome hasn’t expressed interest in the White Sox or been tied to them by any rumors I’ve heard, which mostly center on the Cubs. The White Sox aren’t a bad bet to sign Rowand but given the size and legnth of the contract he’s asking for I honestly don’t think you want him. He’ll be an over priced burdon on somebody but he’d really be bad news for a club with a payroll the size of the Sox and their extensive needs. He’s just not good value. My guess is that you’ll end up taking a flier on a warm body closer to spring training, someone cheap who has a lot of issues themself but who the Sox hope might perform above value. It’s a cold offseason to be a White Sox fan in more ways than one. I won’t lie to you about that. Stick with it, but as I’m sure you know finishing in third place would really be a big accomplishment for Chicago next year and finishing fifth is not an impossibility.
